When is the iPhone 17e Release Date?

The latest edition to Apple’s iconic iPhone line is already out. The iPhone 17e came out on March 11th 2026, and it was really good. We imagine that a significant portion of our audience will already be in possession of an iPhone 17e, or be patiently awaiting the chance to pick one up, so writing a news article about the release date might seem superfluous. 

However, while all of us at Ghostek are dedicated tech geeks, we understand that not everyone else is. The phrase ‘when is the iPhone 17e going on sale’ is still trending, a month after it came out, so we figured we’d spread the good word. 

So, the iPhone 17e is out and you can pick one up at your earliest convenience. But is it a worthwhile purchase? And what do you get with the iPhone 17e?  

Is the iPhone 17e Just a Budget iPhone 17?

Your opinion on the iPhone 17e will hinge on your feelings about the standard iPhone 17. The two are closely related, and casual observers might not even notice a difference. Design-wise, they could be twins. 

Browse the window display at your local Apple store though, and one key differentiation will immediately leap out at you: the starting price. The regular iPhone 17 retails for $799. That’s pretty good, but it’s practically a Ming Vase compared to the 17e. 

The asking price for an iPhone 17e starts at $599. If you include extra storage, this inevitably goes up, but even the most expensive iPhone 17e tops out at $799. This will no doubt be a significant factor for some Apple users; you can potentially pick up an iPhone 17e with more storage space than an iPhone 17, but for the same price. 

The upshot of this is that the iPhone 17e could be dismissed as the budget version. It doesn’t have as many features, and surely it’s worth paying the extra amount to get the best possible iPhone? That’s a fair point, but let’s not pretend that everyone has the best part of a thousand dollars lying around in their bank account. If you’re working with a smaller budget, the iPhone 17e’s lower price tag will be very tempting, and besides…

A Budget iPhone 17 is Still an iPhone

The iPhone 17e is still an incredibly good smartphone. It incorporates a lot of the features and technologies that made the iPhone 17 such a success, including:

• 256GB or 512GB storage (double the starting storage of the iPhone 16e!)

• Super Retina XDR display

• Advanced power management

If you’re not up to speed with your technical jargon, let’s put it in layman’s terms: the Apple iPhone 17e is fast and smooth and more than just a ‘budget phone.’ It can handle video calls, streaming, gaming, browsing, and multitasking as well as any other member of the iPhone family. You could even use it for calling people. If you’re from the past. 

Let’s Talk About the iPhone 17e Camera System

By now, you’re likely wondering how Apple can justify the $200 price difference? The iPhone 17e isn’t as advanced, but it still comes across like a decent, high-end smartphone, right? Compare the cameras on the two iPhones however, and you’ll get some idea. 

Let’s break the iPhone 17e and 17 camera systems down:

• Main Camera: Both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e are equipped with a 48MP main camera. It supports 2x optical zoom quality through sensor cropping. This is the one you’ll use for everyday shots, and it’s pretty good. You won’t find any complaints with either. 

• Ultra-wide Camera: This is where you’ll notice a big advantage for the original iPhone 17. The standard model has an extra 48MP ultra-wide camera, so users will be able to capture highly detailed group photos or landscape shots. The iPhone 17e doesn’t have this. 

• Video: The iPhone 17 has the advantage here, too. Both models support 4K video recording, but the standard iPhone 17 has additional shooting modes and offers greater flexibility. If you have ambitions of being the next Ari Aster, you’ll have a better chance of winning an Oscar one day if you get the iPhone 17. 

• Front Camera: It’s another win for the iPhone 17 here. The iPhone 17e has an impressive 12MP Truedepth camera and supports Face ID and portrait photography. However, the iPhone 17 outdoes it. The 17 has an 18MP front camera, which not only captures a greater level of detail, but also auto-adjusts framing during video calls. 

Other Points: iPhone 17e Color Choices and Battery Life

Those points aside, what other differences will you find? On a superficial note, there is a very minor distinction in the color choices, namely:

This isn’t a vast gulf of distinction by any means. We doubt that many people will be swayed by the colors, but it is worth noting. But what might be a key differential, is the battery life. 

It might be surprising to hear that the iPhone 17e has the larger capacity. It’s fitted with a 4,005mAh lithium-ion battery, whereas the standard iPhone 17, meanwhile, has a 3,692mAh battery. So, the 17e is the better choice here, right?

Not so fast. The 17e has the bigger capacity, but doesn’t run as efficiently, as shown by performance benchmarks. In battery testing, the iPhone 17e supports up to 27 hours of video playback and 21 hours of streaming. The standard iPhone achieves 30 hours and 27 hours respectively. Despite the smaller capacity, the regular iPhone lasts longer. 

Which is Better: the iPhone 17 or iPhone 17e?

With all that in consideration then, which is the better phone? Well, let’s put it this way: if price were no option and everyone could just get a new iPhone without handing any money over, we’d have no hesitation picking the iPhone 17. It is the better of the two.

However, we live in the real world, and like it or not, the cost is a major factor. If you’re enthusiastic about photography and want the best possible camera system, the iPhone 17 is worth the higher cost. But, if superior camera control isn’t on your list of priorities, the iPhone 17e is an excellent alternative. 

How do the iPhone 17e and 17 compare with the iPhone 16e?

As we draw this summary to a close though, we must point out that regardless of which one you choose, you are getting an excellent new iPhone. The previous generation were impressive in their own right, but the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e both outperform them. 

Don’t get us wrong, we loved the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e. But with the iPhone 17 models, you get:

• Faster performance speeds

• Fast wired charging

• Advanced night mode

• Improved anti-reflection

• Better image quality

• Wind noise reduction

• Better call screening

• Ceramic shield protection

• Better scratch resistance

And more besides. We don’t mean to throw shade at the iPhone 16 series, but the iPhone 17 range has outdone it. 

Our Verdict: The iPhone 17e is not just a ‘Budget Phone’

So, as you can probably guess, we have no hesitation recommending the iPhone 17e. It packs a lot of our favorite features from the Apple iPhone 17, and to be honest, that soft pink color choice was a bigger deciding factor than we should admit.
