Galaxy Z Fold 8 Specs Leak: Display, Camera, and More

Summer has arrived, and you know what that means? Higher air conditioning bills and lots of rumors about the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event. It’s reportedly taking place in London in mid-to-late July, and we’re expecting a veritable avalanche of news when it happens. We’re going to be following it closely, and one thing we’re particularly keen to report on is the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

And lo and behold, the rumors are escalating. In the past few days, there have been a few leaks online, including a photo of a Samsung employee using a working Z Fold 8 in public. As always, your favorite phone nerds here at Ghostek have been scouring the information super highway for every tantalising glimpse we can find, and we’ve collated them all here.

So…what’s in store for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8? Allow us to enlighten you. If nothing else, it’ll be a nice distraction from the rising cost of keeping our office cool.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung has become a dominant force in the world of folding phones. Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 was a big success, and as such, there are a lot of high expectations for the sequel. Adding to the pressure are the reports of a forthcoming folding iPhone, so Samsung will understandably want to fight off the competition and retain its position as market leaders.

So, when the Z Fold 8 is officially unveiled, we’re expecting to see:

  • Subtle design changes

  • A smaller display and wider aspect ratio

  • Extra battery power

  • Faster charging

  • Improved AI features

  • Some exciting tweaks to the camera

Let’s put on our detective hats and dive deeper.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Design and Display

We mentioned some subtle changes there, so let’s elaborate. It looks as though the crease will be improved. The Z Fold 7 had a barely noticeable crease, but the Z Fold 8 reportedly goes a step further. It’s said to have a “zero-feel” seam and be more comfortable to hold and carry.

As for the display screen, that’s getting a minor alteration too. It’s predicted to have a 7.6-inch inner screen, a 4:3 aspect ratio, and a 5.4-inch cover screen. It’ll resemble a small tablet when fully opened.

But if the rumors are true, the most notable change will be when you first hold a Z Fold 8: it’s said to weigh just 200 grams. To put that into perspective, go to your pantry and pick up a medium-sized potato. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is going to weigh less than that (and it won’t sprout eyes if you keep it in the dark).

Z Fold 8 Tech Specs

You can put the potato down now. We’re moving on to the tech specs. The Samsung Z Fold 8 looks very impressive under the hood, and is expected to feature:

  • 12GB or 16GB RAM

  • 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage

  • 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, and USB-C connectivity

  • Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset

You might recall we were slightly disappointed when the Galaxy Z Flip 7 used a different chipset, so we’re very pleased to see the Snapdragon staging a comeback. The Elite Gen 5 is reliably smooth and efficient, and we trust it to make the Z Fold 8 a user-friendly phone.

Samsung Galaxy’s Enhanced AI

The Snapdragon news is especially relevant, considering that the AI features are getting an overhaul. Samsung has been collaborating with Google, and the Z Fold 8 is likely to feature upgraded Gemini AI. We’re anticipating:

  • Enhanced multitasking

  • An improved creative studio

  • Real-time translation support

  • Detailed transcriptions

  • Photo-editing assistance

Those photo-editing tools will almost certainly be a benefit in the Ghostek office. Not to name names or anything, but one of our designers has a habit of taking terrible photos and needs all the help he can get. The ability to resize shots, edit out gaps, and use text prompts to remove intrusive shadows is going to do wonders for him.

And Speaking of Photos…The Z Fold 8 Camera

The previous Samsung Galaxy Z Fold had a decent camera setup, and with the exception of that one unnamed designer, everyone at Ghostek managed to get some excellent photos with it. We’d have no complaints if Samsung simply put the Z Fold 7’s camera on the Z Fold 8 without changing a thing, but they’ve decided not to do that.

The Z Fold 7 was equipped with a 12MP secondary ultra-wide-angle lens, but this is being put out to pasture. In its place will be a 50MP sensor, which isn’t so much an evolutionary step as a full-blown leap across a canyon.

Other than that, the camera system reportedly includes a 200MP primary camera, although we must point out that this isn’t a certainty. We’ve seen conflicting reports online, with some news sites excitedly talking about it and others pouring cold water on the idea.

And lastly, there are two 10MP front-facing cameras for the selfie lovers, plus an additional 10MP telephoto lens on the Z Fold 8 Ultra. Even our anonymous developer (but who sits to the left of the noticeboard and has a Ron Swanson coffee mug) should be able to get some decent snaps with those.

The Z Fold 8 Price and Release Date

Now, let’s address the topic that nobody likes: how much it’ll cost. Surprisingly, we’ve got some good news here: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 isn’t going to be as expensive as we thought, at least not at the entry level.

The predicted prices are:

  • 256GB: $1,999

  • 512GB: $2,199

  • 1TB: $2,499

That’s not cheap, and regardless of which model you choose, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is going to take a big chunk out of your bank balance. But that said, the 256GB model is launching with the same price as the previous model, despite production costs going up. We’re not sure how, but Samsung has somehow managed to keep the same price for the lower-tier phone.

The Galaxy Unpacked London event is expected to take place on July 22nd. If previous history is anything to go by, we’ll then have a two-week wait before their new book-style folding phone hits the store shelves. That gives us a possible on-sale date of August 5th

Is it Worth Waiting for a Galaxy Z Fold 8?

Let’s round things off by asking the important question: if you haven’t already got a Galaxy Z Fold 7, should you wait a couple of months for the next model?

Yes. We’ve got no hesitation in answering that with an emphatic ‘yes.’ The Galaxy Z Fold 8 promises to be a remarkable device, and August isn’t that far off. If we had to wait another six months or more, we’d suggest picking up a Z Fold 7 instead (it’s a great phone), but the release date is only around the corner.

Until then, you can revisit Ghostek whenever you want an update. We regularly follow the latest developments from the smartphone industry, and summarize rumors in articles like this one. We also have a wide selection of cases and accessories available, so why not have a browse and start personalizing your phone?
